STEM Outreach
The Pittsburgh Section is very active in STEM Outreach, to encourage students to consider engineering or technology as a career. We present Certificates of Merit to female high school students who excel in math and science. We participate and/or present awards at the following events:
- Future City
- Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science Competiton
- Engineer the Future at the Carnegie Science Center
- Pennsylvania Regional Science and Engineering Fair
K-12 STEM Outreach
SWE Pittsburgh is dedicated to the advancement of women in the engineering profession. Our K–12 STEM Outreach goals are to develop girls’ understanding of what engineers do, to help girls draw connections between their interests/passions and engineering, and to enable them to meet and network with female engineering role models.
We participate in 15+ STEM events each year. Last fiscal year (FY21) we had 42 SWE member volunteers participate in 21 virtual STEM events or pre-recordings that impacted over 3000 girls, 3000 boys, and 200 parents.
SWE Certificate of Merit Program
The SWE Pittsburgh Certificate of Merit program was established to honor high school women who are considering a career in engineering or technology and have high achievement in math and science. We think it is important for young ladies interested in this career to know that there is a community of women engineers who will support and encourage them, and provide resources to them, throughout college and their careers.
We give Certificates of Merit to the female students that each high school selects: one Sophomore, one Junior, and one Senior. In addition, the Senior who is selected receives a $100 award.
