SWE Pittsburgh has expanded!
SWE Professional sections are defined by zip code. On February 17, 2022, the SWE Board of Directors approved SWE Pittsburgh's motion to expand to Morgantown, WV. Before the motion, these members were considered Members at Large.
Why expand?
We look forward to having those in the Morgantown area be a welcome part of SWE Pittsburgh!
Why expand?
- We have long had a relationship with the West Virginia University (WVU) in Morgantown.
- Morgantown is only an hour away from downtown Pittsburgh!
- We've learned a lot through virtual programming during the pandemic. We intend to continue hybrid and virtual programming going forward, so our members farther away will still be able to stay highly involved with the Section.
We look forward to having those in the Morgantown area be a welcome part of SWE Pittsburgh!

SWE Pittsburgh’s submission featured two Virtual SWENext Networking events that were specifically designed together for high school girls. The objectives were to meet other STEM-minded girls and network with SWE members.
The “Zoom Networking for High School Girls” was run on November 17, 2020 during the fall semester and the “SWENext Speed Mentoring” was run on April 22, 2021 during the spring semester. 48 girls and 16 women engineers participated in these two events.

Janise Kim - SWENext Global Innovator Award

Janise Kim, a 12th grader at Fox Chapel Area High School, has won the SWENext Global Innovator Award. This award is given to only 6 SWENext seniors each year. It recognizes the outstanding young women shaping the future of SWE by developing an engineering identity in themselves and others and volunteering in outreach initiatives.
Janise is a longstanding member of the Girls of Steel, an all-female First Robotics Competition team. She co-founded and developed the BuzzBandSM, a patent-pending vibration device that motivates youth with autism to exercise through tactile stimulation, which was selected as a Lemelson-MIT Inventeams Finalist. She also recruited and led a team in developing CITISYNC, a highly-accurate occupancy tracking system that employs deep learning-enabled computer vision to track the number of occupants within a facility at a specific time, for which they were selected to be the grand champions of the Governor’s STEM Competition.
Janise also designed and ran the virtual Mentorship 101 workshop for high school students that SWE Pittsburgh sponsored.
You can view Janise’s submission video here.
